will the legs hold up an alienware 15.6 laptop?

My ACER 17 inch has no problems with support.  I have a tera onboard along with added ssdr.  Does an extremely good job cooling my computer while playing online for hours.

how is it in your lap?  Should I assume it must be on a hard surface and at an angle to work properly?

It's actually flat. You can use it on your lap but I don't very often. I use it mostly when I'm sitting at the table or watching movies on my laptop. It keeps my laptop cooler longer. Hope that helps.

It will hang over a bit but as long as you keep it centered properly I don't see a problem.

It means screen size; I have a 17" laptop and it accommodates it quite nicely with room to spare! Even better is the fans are right where the vents on the bottom of the laptop are, and it keeps it running at least 5-10 degrees cooler under load as a result.

Would not use to cool tube amp or rcv, not designed for this application because the entire surface area should be covered.
