how do you power it up ?

It plugs into your usb port.  The nice thing is that it has a pass through connection that allows you to plug in another device to its usb connector.

Is it comfortable enough to use in your actual lap, or is it meant for use on a tabletop?

I have never used it in my lap, it stays on my table. I would say probably not its all mesh and keeping it in ur lap will block the fan a little bit. I wouldnt recommend doing it.

hi I don't remember when I bought my  deepcool pad but it has been a long  time , way over a year an it is still working great and yes it will work with your 12 " laptop STAY COOL  RAY

Does this cooling pad sticks with the laptop so that i don't have to place it all the time?

At the front edge of the N180 FS there are two anti-slip buckles which optionally tip up for the laptop to rest against keeping it from sliding off.  I don't use those as I have my 17" laptop extending slightly forward of those due to the way my desk is configured.  Nevertheless, the rubber pads on the bottom of my laptop typically provide enough grip on the surface of the N180 FS to prevent slipping.

I know it says metal mesh design is it all metal of just the air intake? destructions seem to say only intake is metal. I'm tired of the plastic ones that flex and stall the fans on my 17 inch dell media, if you don't position the puter just right.

I'll try to answer the best I can. The cooling pad is basically plastic. The only metal material is the top part above the fan. As you can see in the picture, the whole top part made with small holes is the metal. The rest is plastic cover (Sides and bottom).

I am aware that I'm not good at explaining thing. But I tried my best.

If you are asking whether it has a separate power option, the answer is no. The fan blows when the usb is plugged in, and turns off when you unplug the usb.

Which direction does the air flow?

GLAD I bought this! The flow of the air is UPWARD into the computer and around it,,, You can feel it coming out around the laptop while working. It is VERY quiet and there is PLENTY of flow to cool my Toshiba L675 laptop! I usually run a program called "speedfan" which reads the internal temperatures and they are WELL into the HIGH 90's CELSIUS when I play an online game or when watching a video... 
Now since I bought this cooling fan I don't need to run the program only to see the internal temps which are around 46-52 Celsius (just above normal)..  Hope this helped!

does it need to have direct airflow with my intake fan in order to cool? i have a dell inspiron 15 7000 gaming laptop, and its intake is on the top surface, in between the keyboard and screen. will it work?

I'am sorry so long for input on this product. But  the DEEPCOOL N180 works best with laptops with underside intakes and side or upper vent ports. If you are a serious gamer any extra ventilation will help the life of the CPU and memory in the laptop.
