I am considering purchasing this Dell PowerEdge T430 with the PERC H330 controller. I plan to install two Crucial MX500 2TB 2.5-inch SATA SSDs (CT2000MX500SSD1) in the included hot-swap trays. Can you confirm whether standard non-Dell SATA SSDs such as the Crucial MX500 are recognized and operate normally with this T430/H330 configuration? Also, are there any known iDRAC warnings, drive-status issues, or increased fan-speed behavior when using non-Dell SATA SSDs?

One thing I would like to add is that the Crucial MX500 is a consumer SSD designed primarily for desktop and laptop use. It can physically fit in many servers, but fitting the drive does not mean it is intended for the same workload as a server SSD.

The difference matters most when the server runs continuously or handles frequent writes, such as virtual machines, databases, or a busy RAID array. Server SSDs are selected for sustained workloads, with endurance and data protection features specified for those environments. They may also be validated for a particular server and storage controller, which can help with monitoring and support.

The MX500 does include data protection features, including what Crucial calls Integrated Power Loss Immunity. We do not want to suggest that it has no protection. However, that feature should not be assumed to provide the same protection for writes in progress as the enterprise power loss protection specified on data center drives.

An MX500 may be reasonable for a lighter workload, depending on your requirements. For business critical data or a write intensive server, we recommend server grade SSDs that are appropriate for the system and workload. We can review the server model, drive configuration, and intended use to recommend suitable options.

Thank you,
