Question 1

I'm looking at the pics and do not see for sure how this fits on my 4770/1150 setup. Is there a back plate not shown? - or do the nuts/washers come off and mount on the backside of the mobo? thanks for any help

This unit has an elegant and clean mounting system, it is easy to install, runs very quietly, and keeps my Intel Core i7-4771 Haswell CPU nice and cool.

The fan comes with self-adhering steel mounting plates that fit cleanly on the back of the mother board.  No instructions are included and the correct orientation of the plates is not immediately self-evident.  So one should pause and think for a moment and make sure one has the geometry correct before attaching the plates to the motherboard.  The heat exchanger block contains thermal compound printed on it.  For good measure, I added a small bead of Arctic Silver thermal paste and this seemed to work well.  Before screwing the heat exchanger in place, the fan must be snapped off to provide access to the screws.  Once the heat exchanger is mounted, the fan can be snapped back on again.  The mounting screws are held in place by small springs that facilitate installation and screw tightening.  I tightened the four screws in sequence, ½ turn at a time to achieve even pressure application against the processor.  Very simple and elegant.  I rated this unit 5 eggs.

Question 2

To install this, I just screw in the spring loaded screws? or is there a backplate that requires me to remove the motherboard to install to this correctly?
I would prefer if this only needs to be screwed in from the top of the motherboard.

It requires a back plate (included). You are probably replacing the cooler that came with the processor that has the expanding plastic pins. This cooler is quieter and more efficient.

Is this fan capable of cooling an i5 2500k even when OCed?

We have this unit running on an i7-4770k @ 3.50GHz. The processor temps read consistently around 70F. Hope this helps.

What way did you mount this to your motherboard? I have tried it blowing up, blowing down, and now blowing towards the back and still running hot?

I have always mounted the CPU fan to blow towards the nearest case exhaust fan, which is usually at the rear behind the CPU socket.  Running hot in any direction probably means that the thermal paste was not used at all or not spread properly (too thick or patchy).  I usually use a business card to spread a thin, even coat on the CPU surface before mounting the heat sink.

Can i attach a different 92mm fan instead?

You could if the fan was the same round with ears configuration.  A square fan may interfere with the spring screws for the heat sink below the body.  Plus you would have to mount the fan after installing the cooler because the screws would be inaccessible with fan installed first.  I have one on a 4.0 GHz i7 Skylake that runs completely silent, so why change it?  It is only audible during a pressure test like running 5 antivirus utilities at the same time.  Cheers!

HOW TO  INSTALL?

Two brackets with threaded stand-offs go on the underside of the mother board. They have adhesive so stick in place. I had to play with the orientation but they do fit without interfering with the board traces.

From the top-side, the fan then screws into those stand-offs.

The fan comes loose so you can take it off if needed to get to the screws easier. After installing the heat-sink, snap the fan in-place. Take a look at the picture for the proper orientation of the fan if you forget: plastic lip goes on the sides.
