    The photo in the product description showed a small tube of thermal paste but my package did not include any.  If you don't have any, order some Arctic Silver 5 with this cooler.

      Maybe.  It depends on your computer case.  Some cases have a cutout in the motherboard tray allowing you to swap the cooler without removing the motherboard.  You need access to the back of the motherboard to place the mounting bracket that the screws in the cooler screw into.

Does the motherboard need to be removed from the case to install a backing plate ?

Yes the motherboard will need to be removed unless your case has a cut out under the cpu that allows access.
