do I need to buy a separate backing plate for this cpu fan?

No.  If you look at the picture really closely, the crossed piece of metal at the bottom of the fan assembly is actually the bottom fan attachment through the mobo.

Do I need to buy separate thermal paste?

Accepted Answer

No, the bottom comes with a shield on it, that protects the thermal paste that is already on it. I use a specific "silver" compound, so I did remove what was on it and put mine on. But, it does come with thermal compound already on it. So, be careful taking it from the package.

The Dynatron R17 is designed to screw into the 4 matching holes in the LGA 2011 socket. I had no problems attaching  my purchased R17 cooler. I was using an ivy Bridge-E CPU. It will fit an ASUS Sabertooth MB with a LGA 2011 socket and sufficient (typical) case clearance (height).
