I was curious on what Tamra W said about this router having a fair bit of noise when both bands are enabled.  Is that true, and if so, how much reduction in Internet connection speed do you see on average?

I have a solid DSL connection (3 Mbps) which I was thinking of upgrading later this year (6 Mbps or more, maybe up to 50 Mbps).  I have a laptop and three mobile devices connected to the Internet (2-3 at most at one time).  The one mobile device (Kindle Fire HD) doesn't get the connection that the others do, about 1-1.5 Mbps slower.  The router I have is an old Linksys (E1000) that only has 2.4 GHz band.  I do some online streaming (Amazon Instant Video; am considering Netflix and/or Hulu Plus), and potentially may be doing more in the future.

I'm not sure if upgrading to this would help to make my connection a bit faster and more stable, especially since the 5GHz band would now be an option?  None of my devices have wireless-AC, though the wireless adapter would be AC.  I suspect my next computer will probably have AC, as probably one or more mobile devices would too.

Therefore, is this adapter a good one for utilizing both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands at the same time, or is it so detrimental that the one band should be turned off and only one be utilized at any one time? If that would be the case, probably another wireless-AC router would be a better choice? Any suggestions as to a router that can utilize both bands without any or much noise? Thank you.

Are the antennas removable?

No. they are not really meant to be removed. But they do swivel 360 and and are hinged like a std antenna. So they can be turned flush behind the unit adding nothing but the width of one antenna. Matter of fact it's shipped that way.

If I am reading this right, can I essentially use this router as a "wireless adapter" for my computer? Connect my computer to this via Ethernet while this is connected to my main router wirelessly?

Yes, this indeed possible because you can configure the 5GHz and 2.4 GHz devices separately.   You would use either 2.4 GHz wireless or 5 GHz wireless to connect to your main router in Basic-Infrastructure mode, then setup the other interface to AP mode and brodcast a different SSID (or disable it).  Be sure to disable DHCP server function.   This configuration bridges all ports and thus puts you on one network block. Note the WAN port is unused.

I was having problems with bandwidth (Dota 2) on my landlord's wifi network two floors up.  So I set this device up to connect to my landlord's wireless in infrastructure mode on 2.4GHz b/g/n.  Now I am rebroadcasting a new SSID in my apartment on 5GHz A+N+AC, and using the 4xGBE ports.  Works like a charm.

I would recommend this product as long as you don't mind the complete lack of documentation for even the advanced options. For example, there is this option called 'Fast NAT' with no explanation of what it does.  There is a help button but nothing shows up when you click it... note this is firmare 1.16.

what about custom firmwares like dd-wrt?

The router itself does not have a DLNA server built in. If you have a DLNA server, this router will not interfere with that service and will work fine.

As far as custom firmware, such as DD-WRT, or Tomato, I am not aware of any available for it, yet. The GPL source code for the current firmware is available for download from the EdiMax site however.

Hi, I want to set up this router as a wireless bridge to replace my outdated (but trustful) wrt54g dd-wrt. Can some one give me step by step, setting it up. Thanks so much ? (the manual did not give me any help, I did read it).

The Edimax BR-6478AC does not have the ability to act as a bridge.

Joseph C.  this router is amazing. Yes it can operate at 2.5 and 5GHZ at the same time with no problem on either band. Very stable and especially fast in the 5GHZ band..... get it you will not be sorry. Check out smallnetbuilder for performance reviews. I use it with an  Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 in my HP Envy notebook and am quite pleased.
