Question 1

Can the fans be mounted on either the top or bottom of the radiator?  Any noticeable loss of performance whether they are pushing or pulling?

You can mount the fans to either side of the radiator. The performance of the airflow would depend on how you are trying to direct the air through the case. Either way your are moving the same amount of air through the radiator. In my NZXT Phantom I have the radiator top mounted with the air being pushed through out the top and the CPU idles around 6 to 7 Celsius, with Antec diamond thermal paste.

Question 2

I need to top mount this on my case with the fans on top, and radiator on the bottom.  Can the fans be mounted on either side of the radiator?  Is there any appreciable performance loss pulling the air through rather than pushing it?

I set mine with the fans below the radiator pushing air up through it.  The fans used on radiators need to be a higher static pressure fan and I really believe they work best as pushers.  I believe on this radiator it is possible to set up as a push pull but to me this adds too much noise.  With the fans below the radiator pushing air up through the radiator it also cuts some of the fan noise.  I am overclocking an I7 950 from 3.07gig to 4.2gig at stock voltage with this setup.  If you set it up as a pull fan only there would be a small decrease in the cooling in my opinion but I have no data to back that up.  If you have room for the fans and radiator in the first place why not put the fans below?  John...

no thermal paste preapplied or included? does it even need it and what's a good recommendation?

Best thermal paste in my opinion is Artic Silver 5 thermal compound. I have had nothing but success with it on all of my builds. Not boasting but i am well over 20+ builds and all still running today, Even my old AMD Socket A. 486! lol. ;) I even put that Artic Silver 5 in a friends grow light using some new HID (High Intensity Diode-A High powered LED on steroids, basically..) Technology and it is brighter and cooler than it has been since he bought it. Need i say more?.. Go Artic Silver 5 and never have a processor smoke again.. ;)

Can you either change out the red colour or paint it? Or will it all be hidden once it's in?

Depending on how you mount it, push or pull, the red will be covered up. Most likely, the red gasket will be covered once mounted in a case that supports a 240 radiator. It wasn't a problem for me. I was concerned about the red not matching with my blue led lighting scheme. But it was covered up once mounting it in my case.

If you're going for an open radiator design, a black sharpie will easily work. And, if my memory serves me correctly, that gasket may be removable on that particular side if it's still showing.

Does This Include Thermal Paste?

It does include the thermal paste.  In just the right proportion.  It comes in a tube that is similar in design to a syringe.  I used the entire amount, and when I pulled the CPU later for an unrelated issue, it had perfect coverage.  1150 socket

Can I use different fans on this cooler or do only the stock fans work?

All I can tell you for sure is that Enermax states they are a high pressure fan, which they attribute to the "special fan blade shape".  I recommend you go to their website, read the material there and compare it to any fan you are considering.  A PDF they have states the Static Pressure for their fans as variable from .08 to 7.4 (mm-H2O).

Would this fit in a Fractal design Define R4 case? I would move the stock out take fan to the front and replace it with a Corsair AF 140. An mount this to the top of the case. Might be a tight fit but I really want this thing to cool my new i5-4690K.

yes, this would fit in a fractal define r4 it has room on the top for a 240mm rad. I personaly have this in an nzxt phantom, the old full tower and it works great i had enough room to do a push-pull config.

Is the fin design the durable fins?  The pictures say otherwise

I am not sure of your definition of durable but I believe the answer is yes:  They are not bendable when I push hard with my fingers and they feel very strong as steel with only 1" of span due to heavy cross braces.

I have been running this for about 3 years;  The only flaw is that one fan arrived dead so I use a substitute.
