yes, I have two V500 and one V600 all working on Win 7. there is a software package that comes with them to allow connection of the buttons on the front and open various scan tools, such as create and PDF file or scan a page and attach it to an email or create a image file. I don't think there would be any issue with using win 8 since the applications have been updated since we purchased them. There may be issues with Win XP or older OS.
There may be issues if you're trying to connect to legacy applications (i.e... and older Twain driven OCR Program). Scans Fast with almost now warm up time.

Can you crop images before saving?

This scanner is excellent for photos and documents of all sizes and restores photos in poor condition. I find no capabilities for cropping images on the scanner software. I use PhootShop and other photo editing software. Some of it is free. If you want a good and versatile scanner, the Epson in a good choice. It (can) automatically restore but does not edit images  as far as that I can  find.

is this an 11x17??

I don't think so. It is at the office where I work, and I am home at the moment. I bought this so that I could scan legal forms out of books or other formats directly to editable Word documents. I have found that it is better then to copy the text into a plain text document and reformat everything. If the document you are scanning has a lot of formatting, the converter tries to replicate that in a new Word document. I found it easier just to start from plain text.

Does the lid lift completely off? if not, what is the height that the lid can lift up if I wanted to scan something that wasn't flat, like a book with thick binding or a canvas?

As far as I know there isn't a way to completely detach the lid. It does have  extendable hinges so you can scan something up to an inch thick with the lid down flat. If you need more than that you can leave the lid up and either provide your own background or use nothing at all. I have a 4" deep box with a nice white interior that happens to fit perfectly, which I use when I scan plant material or anything I don't want squashed by a lid. Hope this helps!

Does this scanner work on wireless?

No.  It only has a USB 2 interface.  Other than that, it scans all kinds of documents, photos, slides & film negatives.  It is primarily designed as a Photo & film scanner, although it works quite well with OCR.  If you're doing heavy duty office scanning, however, you should look elsewhere.

How is this scanner for scanning pages of hardbound book material?

I have this scanner and it does an excellent job of scanning text as well as photos.  You can scan book material into PDF format just fine.  The scanner software allows you to scan into PDF format for easy opening and reading.  I've had this scanner for a few years scanning both photos and text-based material and I am not disappointed with it's performance. I don't believe there are any cons with this scanner, it's a winner.
