Will this work with a light-weight laptop since it's smaller thant he standard size laptop?

It will work fine for a smaller size, your laptop just won't cover all the surface area.  Mine is wider than the base but not as long going the other way.  That said... there is a screw you turn to adjust based on how heavy your laptop is (so the stand neither sinks nor rises when you have your laptop on it and angle things the way you want), just like most monitor arms do.  The ergotron product page says it can accomodate 3.5 to 14 pounds.  So if you were putting some tiny superlight 2 pound laptop on it, maybe the range of adjustment would not accomdate that.  You could probably fix that by adding some extra weight, like a thin book under the laptop or something.
