Question 1

Does the bag stand up right while loaded?  while unloaded?  In the everki you tube videos, they always load the bag while on its back.  I'm not sure if they do this b/c 1) the bad cannot stand upright while unloaded 2) to show better camera angles.

It does stand up right while loaded. I think it would also stand fairly up when unloaded as well - I usually have some items in it when it is mostly unloaded and it does stand up. Overall, I am really happy with this bag - it has everything that I need it. I highly recommend it.

is there a checkpoint Everki bag that is smaller than the atlas?

This one fits my 17" laptop perfectly.  Not sure if they have a smaller version or not.

I bought a new 15 inch MacBook Pro and it fits in without any issues. You'd be surprised how much room there really is. Everything is adjustable.
