Is this the reference design card from nvidia? In other words, does it look awesome?

Yes it is a reference card, FTW and Classified cards are not reference PCB however. And hell yeah does it look awesome, the cooler on this thing is boss.

Question 2

I have this installed inside a Bitfenix Colossus Mini-itx case. It doesn't have a vented/meshed side panel. Will the card be ok as far as temps since it's a blower type cooler?

well for sure a side vent panel would improve the cooling of this card but there is also other things in play here.
1. are you using liquid cooling or air only ? 
2. if you are using liquid do you have it on the card ? /2a. if air how many fans you have inside working ? 
3. do make sure (if any) fans on top is pulling the air out of the case and not in.
4. are you over clocking the video card or leaving it at stock settings .

just so you know my setup I have the haf-x case (damn big case)  and I have 2 big fans blowing air in and 3 pulling the air out and I rarely feel warm air coming out and I only use stock settings for video card and OC the cpu and I play games like WoW/FF14/MWO.   but all in all I do believe as long as you don't over clock and have a fan up top pulling the warm air out and some fans in there helping to keep the air inside as cool as you can you should have 0 issues.

Does this come with a backplate? Not sure why all cards dont have these for looks.

It does not come with a backplate. You have to buy it from the EVGA web store if you want one. Also Be sure to match the model of 770 to the correct 770 backplate.

Question 4

Can I run two of these in SLI and have headroom to overclock CPU, RAM, etc? My power supply is Corsair AX 860i Platinum.

The Corsair AX860i would have a little headroom but, not a lot so it would have to be a very mild overclock. You do have a platinum rated psu so that will have a little. I would say you could probably get 4.5Ghz out of the cpu, these ram you can probably run around 2400Mhz and with these gpu's in SLI you would be hard pressed to squeeze 100Mhz more out of them with this psu. You might also want to look into some sort of ram cooling as well because they will get hot

I've never understood why engineering doesn't add factory back plates to the cards? Most everyone now a days has a clear sided window on their gaming rig, and the first thing that catches any ones eye is the video card. Engineering puts all the fancy art work on the face side of the card and no one ever sees it!  I got a back plate from Evga and it make a world of a difference in appearance..

Computing equipment should not be designed for Toys R Us. When I see elaborate doo-dads, fins and blinking lights, I know the mfg spent more time and money on advertisement than in the product. But effectively this is the division between engineering graphics cards and gaming cards. Engineering cards are there to perform accurately, consistently, and for years, at high speed. Gaming cards are designed for extreme high speed calculations of lower precision and at a specific price. At any point in time, these products are amazing for what they do for their part of the computing world. Part of that world in gaming is to have attractive design elements that will cause enjoyment for the largest portion of the gaming population. Engineering graphics cards have other requirements to design to: eg a back plate in Lexan has a very poor coefficient of thermal conductivity relative to aluminum. And so there is the design choice: cool chips with consistent long term performance of the circuit, or super-neat looking stuff that suffers a higher mortality rate.

I was wondering if this sized graphics card would fit into this Hp Desktop "HP Pavilion HPE h9-1215t Phoenix CTO Desktop PC"?

In my opinion, Yes the card would fit in the case. There are issues though. 1st-You need to make sure your motherboard supports pci-e 2.0 or 3.0, if it is a 1st gen pci-e save your money because you need the bandwidth of the newer pci-e slots. 2nd- Your power supply unit will not handle this card. You need a 8pin 150watt connector and a 6pin 75watt connector.

Question 7

What is the difference between this EVGA card, and say, the 02G-P4-2771-KR which has the PCI Express 3.0 x16 bus? I understand that the x16 card support 16 PCI lanes. What does this card have, x8? (This does not appear to be specified.)

Also, what is the significance of the difference? There appear to be more "PCI Express 3.0" cards and relatively few "PCI Express 3.0 x16" cards.

The only reason that a pcie16 card would run at x8 speed would be due to the motherboard. I have not seen a motherboard (yet) that dos not have at least one slot that supports this. Pcie16 is a form factor. Any video card that you find that runs on pci express or PCIE is going to be PCIE X16 unless you are running that card as a second card in a SLI/Crossfire setup( meaning two or three cards installed on a single mother board) only when you do this do some motherboards have extra slots that are at slower speeds like x8 to free up bandwidth for the bus. You shouldn't have this issue as PCIE 3.0 is supposed to allow full x16 bandwidth on multiple cards at once. If you are only buying one of these cards. It should matter either way. Your motherboard will run it at X16 speed nonetheless. Hope this long explanation helps.

I bought the vanilla version 02G-P4-2770-KR of the 770. im quite happy with it. seems quieter than my old 580. Is the vapor chamber cooler the same on both of these cards? the basic card has a plastic cover and this one is the titan version. Short of me taking mine apart, can anyone tell me whats under the hood?

All the reference coolers for the 700 series GTX's are identical with the exception of the designated series value i.e. 760, 770,780 and so on. As far as what's under the hood is the heat pipes on top of the gpu die, dissipation fins, and the fan. Also a connection to the GTX logo light.
