My motherboard is an ASUS Sadertooth 990FX.  Does that motherboard support PCI Express 3.0 and can use this video card?

Your motherboard looks like it comes equipped with SLI capability which means it should be able to do PCI express since the technologies came out around the same time. If you have your manual to your motherboard, it should say in there I believe. On another note, if you are getting a 700 series card, I would suggest jumping up to the 780, the 80 outperforms the 60 by a large margin in my experience.

would this be compatible with an intel core i5?

I'm currently running this with a first gen Intel Core i7-930, on a Gigabyte board. Usually they work right out of the box, every once in a while you may need a motherboard firmware update, but that's rare.

Mine I just plugged in, booted up, and installed the nVidia drivers (on Windows 7 Ultimate) and it's been working like a charm ever since.

The main compatibility concern is will it work with your Operating System. And that's a matter of drivers from nVidia.

I have a motherboard with only a PCI express 2.0x16 slot, the specifications for this card did say something about being compatible with a PCI express 2.0 slot though and I was looking for confirmation that it does work with such slots?

Yes it will work. The PCI Express cards are backwards compatible to PCI Express 2.0. You won't get the increased speed of 3.0 but you probably won't care as 2.0 is plenty for most.

Go to the EVGA site and find your card, the details will be there.
I also believe that the video will default to the monitors native/default resolution, so make sure that if you want 1920x1080p, (which is great for gaming), then your monitor needs to be full 1080p resolution. There may be higher resolution monitors but you will pay.
Another note, 60hz is pretty common but 120hz might offer a cleaner picture.

The video card, hard drive, and OS will all work fine with that mobo.

The case should as well, but I generally suggest a case that can handle a standard ATX size mobo, just to have room to work with.

The rest requires more information to answer.

The CPU you reference could refer to a few of AMD's chips.  What you're looking for here is the socket type.  The mobo you picked has an AM3+ socket, so any CPU using that socket, or just AM3, should work fine.

The memory you reference only tells us the brand and size.  To know if it will work with this mobo we also need to know the type.  With this mobo you should be using DDR3 1333 with a maximum size per module of 8GB.  You can use faster memory if you overclock, but that's not normally needed these days.

As for the power supply, I would recommend at least a 700w with the mobo and video card you've picked.  If you want to be safe, go for an 800.  Power supplies will last longer if you get one rated higher than what you actually need because you're not going to be pushing it at 100% all the time.

Requires 500 watts or greater. I chose a 1000 watt because I originally was going to configure and maintain my system with dual graphic display cards in SLI mode. I did not gain any improvement with my video editing and rendering times so I downgraded to just one display card and built another workstation.

It depends on the rest of your system's power requirements. I had to upgrade to a 800 watt but I'm also running a avo video input card, wifi card, USB 3.0 card, and an additional emu sound card. Use the online psu requirements tool on new eggs website.

will this work with my Gateway DX4860? i am new to the PC world and would like to get this right on the first try, and also would it work with a CORSAIR CX series CX600 600W Power Supply? or do i need more power?

Hi Marc,

I'm not sure if you've found the answer to your questions or not, but hopefully I can help a little bit if you haven't.

First, without knowing the exact motherboard within the DX4860, I can only go off the information I've found online.  That being said, what I found suggests that the motherboard has at least one PCI Express 2.0 slot x16.  While this is not the 3.0 the card requires, PCI Ex is backwards compatible, which means that the motherboard can support this card.  The second point you will need to clarify for yourself is the amount of room within the case - Do you have the space to accommodate the card's 9.5" x 4.376" dimensions?  If you can verify the space and the PCI Ex 2.0 slot, then yes, this card will work with your motherboard.

The card also requires "One 8-pin PCI Express power connector or two available 6-pin PCI Express power connectors and one 6-pin PCI Express power connector or two available hard disk power connectors."  According to your power supply specifications, you have 2 x 6+2-Pin, so yes, the power supply meets both the wattage and the connector requirements.

Based on the above, the answer to your questions are - Yes, this card will work with your Gateway DX4860 and your CX600 can provide the necessary power.

according to a power supply calculator All I need to run  a system including this card, an i3 3150, an h81 mobo, and hybdrid drive is 363 watts. I'm putting in a 450W sfx psu. The specifications say it requires a 500W psu, but what does that mean exactly? will it not work if the psu is less than 500W? how could the card possibly know?

The 500W listed is the total recommended wattage required estimated by nvidia, you should look at the manufactures specs first. The card requires 130W and will not function if 130W is not available. The 500W is recommended because you should have some headroom above what you normally need.  Also a minimum of 30 A(Amps) is needed on the 12V rail to power the 760. What is a rail? A rail is a channel that attaches to the PSU, namely the 12V rail attaches to your GPU.

The card monitors the amount of power it uses. How does it know? Well it has sensors that monitor the amount of power it draws. You can view it in the precision x driver EVGA uses. And if it doesn't have enough power (watts), then it will not power on.

Power (measured in Watts) = Current (measured in Amp) * Voltage (measured in Voltage)
