What type of VPN Client software is used with this box? Does Fortinet have something like Cisco's "AnyConnect" client for teleworkers?

Yes. It has Forticlient. Which can be used with or without fortinet's UTM subscription. It also serves as malware protection and firewall if you choose. (Controlled by the fortinet itself ) that portion of course requires the subscription. Well worth it in my opinion!

do you have to buy a subscriptions to use this firewall?

Fortinet offers an *optional* cloud-based monitoring service with this router that is free for 1 year.  If you want it, you can pay to continue it.  But it is definitely not required to use the router.  This router is outstanding.  Rock-solid stable, great VPN options, highly configurable.
