Question 1

Two questions: 
1) Does this come with two case fans?  The photos show 2, but one reviewer wrote that he only got one fan.  Are they both 140mm?  2) Is the right panel removable in order to access the SSDs if necessary, without having to remove the motherboard/tray?

It has 2 140mm fans. One at the back and the other is hidden behind the hard drive rack at the front of the case. You can access it from behind the front door if you remove the filter.  Both panels come off, so you have easy access to the 2 SSD locations on the right side. The motherboard is easy to get to, but you cannot remove the tray. This case is excellent! Super quiet. I have 8 hard drives and 1 SSD and it stays cool with the 2 included fans. I'm not a gamer, so I have a average video card, but a 900wt power supply. I'm 100% happy and it's a bargain for the price!

Question 2

Are the removable fan slot covers  (on the top) made of steel?

They appear to be plastic.  The top ( outside ) surface has the same brushed feeling as the rest of the case.  Internally, there's a layer of soundproofing.  They flex easily if you remove them from the case and hold both ends while twisting.

Question 3

Do we get motherboard mounting screws with this chassis ?

Yes

You get 8 standoffs and 8 motherboard screws in the accessories box, and even a small plastic tool you can place on top of them that lets you tighten them with a standard screwdriver should you so desire.

Accessory box also includes 4 power supply screws, 8 optical drive screws, 4 additional front fan screws (longer screws to accommodate the design), 32 3.5" drive screws, 32 2.5" drive screws, and 5 cable ties.

Question 4

I'm confused on the airflow for the front of the case.  When the panel is shut can the computer be on?  I love the slick design but I don't understand how air flow is allowed for the front two fans when the panel is closed.

There is ventilation on both sides of the front. Where you see that grill at the front corner essentially.

Temps are obviously going to suffer a bit, but I will gladly take a couple degrees of increased temps to have that silence and sleek look

Question 5

Are there USB ports in the back? Or somewhere else? I just can't imagine being limited to only 4 USB ports on a desktop. Surely I'm missing something.

Yes....only 4 USB ports on the front-top of case near the power button.  There are 2 USB 2.0 and 2 USB 3 ports.  I can't speak for EVERY model of cases....but generally the USB ports on the back of a case would only come from your motherboard....and not the case itself.   The ones on the front will need to connected to your motherboard in order to work....as would any USB port that comes on a bare AXT case.

Question 6

Does this case come with screws for mounting your drives? Specifically the 5.25" bays.

Question 7

I have a Corsair H60 CPU cooler. Where would be the best place to install it to allow for maximum cooling and noise reduction?

Yes, you can definitely use that cooler. I'd recommend installing it into the front, assuming you don't need all 8 drive bays. Also install it as intake obviously.

You could also install it as an exhaust in the rear vent and move the stock fan that was there to the front. It's not going to be as quiet as it would be if you installed it in the front though.

Question 8

Does this case do a good job of dampening hard drive noise?

The fan noise is low, but If a hard drive is noisy, it can still be heard in a quiet room.  The anti-vibration rubber only reduces the noise a small amount.

Question 9

is this case really big?   its bigger than my HAF 912.

I have this case and absolutely love it! Compared to your HAF case the R5 is a little shorter, little wider and deeper. Here are the dimensions of both.

HAF 910  - Height, Width, Depth:  18.90" x 9.10" x 19.50"
Define R5- Height, Width, Depth:18.19" x 9.13" x 20.91" With Feet
                                                          17.76" x 9.13" x 20.51" Without Feet

Question 10

What exterior panels are metal? The door? Side panels? Top?

The front panel is plastic but has a brushed aluminum finish as you can see in the picture. The side panels are both made out of metal with sound dampening foam! The top is also metal as well.
