How 'semi-hard' is this mouse pad?  Would it work on a couch with my laptop?  Or would it squish to much to track accurately?

You're probably going to want something stiffer. I just got this mouse pad, and though it has enough weight to keep it from moving easily, it's still rather flexible. That being said, I'd look for either a fully plastic mouse pad, or maybe consider a desk or laptop stand.
