Would it be a good idea to buy this now, and upgrade to two of these in the future? 
NOTE: My motherboard supports duel channel ram.

Even-though your RAM performance will be effected running in single channel, it is done regularly so you don't have to replace 2 X 4GB cards when upgrading from 8 to 16GB. Just make sure CAS latency and all other timing numbers match.

Will this work with Ryzen?

Ram compatibility is really up to the motherboard, check the motherboard specs for supported memory speeds, so that you don't purchase faster memory that is not compatible. Check motherboard vendor list for tested compatibility with most memory brands. Compatibility flow would be CPU > MB > RAM
