Laptop

Hello.
Sorry for the silly question, but I am looking for advice on good gaming laptops. Specifically, I am looking to play games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Sims.
I appreciate any advice and help.
Thanks

Not a silly question at all, let me look into it and get back to you

If you’re trying to get the laptop specifically for those games and gaming in general then I would recommend going on the store pages and check the system requirements. On Steam, they have a minimum and recommended for hardware.

That’s the main thing and then from there you can consider brand preference, design and other general factors that are part of the shopping experience.

Hope this helps.

Hi @alostcause

Good to see you here! Baldur’s Gate 3 is a great game and I’m happy to share some advice about your question. Not a silly question at all. Most programs will have a recommended specs section attached. Below are Baldur’s Gate 3 recommended specs. I’d say an Intel 12th gen or above CPU would do you well or most AMD Ryzen 7’s out there from the looks of it. You want to give some performance overhead to be able to enjoy the game. I’d also recommend 32 Gb Ram as that should be too pricy to upgrade. Getting a RTX 4000 or above would do you very well for your needs or an RX 9060 XT or above as well.

It does. I am open to all suggestions

thanks. I play on my PS5 all the time, but want to expand my horizons

This is a tough one. Your budget is going to play a big roll in any suggestions you should take.

If you want it new, you’re looking at probably $600, at the low end. Sadly, with the current market, you’ll probably not save much money by trying to find a used one on FB or Craigslist. Who knows, you may get really lucky though.

I’d personally recommend at least a 30 series GPU, because you never know when NVIDIA will cut support for their 16 and 20 series cards. It could be a bit, but they could also cut support by the end of next year, if they decide they want to sell more cards.

Big question I’d want answered before any recommendation: How much are you willing/hoping to spend?

Thanks.
Honestly, and being 100% transparent, between $1600 - $2500. Again, this is completely new so I probably budgeting to low. It is why I posted my question. I simply do not know :frowning:

@SaintTyr gave you a great guideline. I’d spend a bit more for a smoother experience. Once you reach about $800+ budgets, you’ll start seeing slightly diminishing gains.

Am I in the right price range?
I have a laptop, but that one is used for work and personal stuff, but want this laptop dedicated for gaming. Make sense?

@alostcause, you can get a pretty good gaming laptop for within that range. Maybe even a little cheaper. I have a Dell G16 7630 with at 4070 that I got last May for under the lower end of your price range.

@SaintTyr made a great recommendation for specs, but most of us would be hesitant to recommend a specific one for you to choose.

They all have their flaws:
MSI has earned the moniker “Many Serious Issues” in some circles.
HP has a history of QC issue when it comes to their hinges.
Dell/Alienware tends to build their stuff in a way that is difficult to repair (most are guilty of that though).
ASUS tends to be priced higher than other brands with the same specs.
Razer tends to be way overpriced compared to other brands with the same specs.
Lenovo is reported to have cooling issues (more so than other brands)

Just based on MY experience with it so far, my personal recommendation would be a Dell G series. You can customize them slightly on their website (increased storage, ram, beefier GPU, screen, keyboard, etc) but most of it will just add to the price. I did have an issue with random shut-downs for a little bit, but was able to fix it by tweaking the power profiles. I’ve seen mixed reviews on their customer service, but I’ve not had to deal with them so I can’t really speak on it.
