Valve is making a bold performance claim for its upcoming Steam Machine: according to a Valve engineer, the system is “equal or better” than about 70% of gaming PCs currently used by Steam players. This benchmark is based on data from the Steam Hardware Survey, which tracks the CPUs, GPUs, memory, and other hardware configurations of active Steam users.

Not everyone is convinced, however. Some in the community question whether “70% of PCs” is a fair or useful comparison. Others stress that the success of the Steam Machine will likely hinge on its price point, noting that even if its performance is good for a majority of Steam users, its value depends on how much Valve charges.
