News: Marvel Rivals Director rejects the "Gooner Game" stereotype. Insists on "classic" outfits inspired by comics.

An article from Forbes addresses the rising label attached to Marvel Rivals that of a “gooner game,” a term highlighting the game’s overtly sexualized character designs, particularly its revealing skins and outfits. Creative Director Guangyun Chen acknowledges this perception but defends the visual direction. He emphasizes that many of these designs such as those for Mantis and Psylocke’s “Vengeance” are rooted in classic comic aesthetics, later modernized to resonate with current trends and player tastes.

Critics and commentators remain skeptical of Chen’s justification. Even though he frames these designs as authentic homages, many see them as deliberate fan service visual provocations that lean toward sensationalism more than fidelity to the source materials. Putting the controversy aside, this design direction reflects a broader creative strategy. By drawing on the flamboyant tradition of comic book visuals and blending it with modern seasonal themes, Marvel Rivals is establishing a unique stylistic identity.
