Shawn Layden, once at the helm of PlayStation, recently shared some high praise for Nintendo, and it’s not just fan chatter. Layden said something striking, “I mean, I think they’re very focused on who their fans are and their fans want. No one is more in touch with their fan base than Nintendo. Even PlayStation was never this in touch with the fan base as Nintendo is. They know who their fans are.” What a strong quote from the former PlayStation head. Nintendo does do a great job knowing the majority of the player base. Even during the price controversy when the Switch 2 was released, they kept the same price and the Switch 2 was sold out nearly everywhere.

This is a rare compliment from a rival. Respect is given where it’s due. I ask you this question. What does it mean to be in touch with your customer base? Does it mean releasing games people want to play? Pricing the consoles appropriately? Having great events such as PlayStation’s State of the Play? This also begs the question, What is Nintendo’s strategy? What do they do different than their competition?
