Can it be upgraded to Windows 8.1 for free? How?

First you need to make sure all Windows updates have been installed. This will probably happen automatically, but may take a few days before it's complete as Windows appears to stagger them. Once the updates are up to date, the next time you go to the Windows store, it will offer you a free upgrade to Windows 8.1. It takes several hours for the upgrade to download and install so be prepared to leave your computer on and plugged in for a long period of time. Plus, make sure your computer is not set to sleep or hibernate when not being used, or it will shutdown the computer in the middle of the install.

Can you use the mouse with a touch screen?

Certainly you can. I have used both a wired USB mouse as well as my wireless. Sometimes it is just easier when I am using this like a desktop by also connecting my 23in monitor and a keyboard. It has no issues with all that and I can still use the touchscreen at the same time. True little multitasker for such a small device. The 2G of RAM had me worried but it is not too slow as long as you keep that in mind.

Beware that it's 32-bit Windows 8 and if/when updated to Windows 8.1, then it no longer supports an external monitor.

Yes, but it only has two USB ports. A better bet is to use a Bluetooth mouse and keep the USB ports free for other things. That's what I did.

Is the keyboard exposed (facing outward) when used in "tablet" mode. I see that the keyboard does NOT detach.
