Question 1

I really like the specs and price on this computer, but a friend's son who "knows" computers said I shouldn't get Windows 8 because it had a lot of bugs and wasn't going to be supported.  Is this true and something I should worry about?

I've been working with computers for over 40 years and, while initially cautious of any new OS, Windows 8 has been out for over a year now so, I'm beginning to warm up to it.

As for bugs, well...any complex software is susceptible to glitches here and there but, MS is fairly experienced with OS's so, I wouldn't worry much about bugs.  The main criticism of Windows 8 is that it's user interface may be confusing and has a fairly steep learning curve.  That aside, W8 was designed with new compatibility features, performance improvements, security enhancements, and improved support for touchscreen devices.  Besides, what are your alternatives, really?

I can't imagine a company not supporting their flagship product.  MS has provided support for XP for nearly 14 years.  Also, MS began development on Windows 8 before Windows 7 was even released.  Which do you think will get the better support?  One more thing, Windows 8.1 has recently been released, further reducing the concern for bugs and glitches.  BTW, I haven't noticed any in my notebook, yet.

Can I get Window 7 with this instead of 8?

No,  ASFAIK it only comes with 8. After updating to 8.1 the computer seemed to run faster. I have 8G memory so perhaps there is better memory management.  I was very unhappy with 8, but 8.1 is much better. In fact it is now my OS of choice, over 7 and linux Mint. For the money this laptop reps great value, decent screen and speakers. There is space for a SSD, but I had to rewire just a bit.  I didn't do it, but a shop did it.  So now I have a 120G SSD and the original 500G HD.  I use a USB DVD drive.

Noticed it doesn't give screen resolution. What is it?

Control Panel --> Display--> Adjust Resolution.
I usually use windows controls. Are you looking for a specific key on the keyboard that changes the resolution ?

No touch screen, but it does have a touchpad.  No real need for a touchscreen for a screen this large.
