Yes, but it will only be able to operate on the SATA protocol with that drive, so your speeds will be the same as the SATA version. If you want to maximize the M.2 slot look for a drive that operates on the PCI-Ex4 bus(NVMe)

Bus speeds are dependent on the CPU / RAM / Multipliers being used.  I run this with a i7 6700K OC'd to 4.7GHZ.  Meaning my Multiplier is 47X over a 100MHz bus when the CPU is involved.  The ram I run is 3200MHz DDR4.  If we are thinking the same thing, then I usually look at what the board says it can do natively in the ram.  If it says (2133OC/1866/1600) I can derive the board itself supports a native 1866MHz speed.  Then again, OC isn't the end the world.  This board has plenty of MOSFETs so there is plenty of room for OC.

This Mobo Z170 was intended for 6th Gen. If you're looking for a Mobo to match 7th Gen., I would go with the Z270. If you already have the Z170 and want to improve your rig with a new 7th generation CPU I will also go for the Z270. Now, answering your question the best I can I would say, supported it? Yes. Worked as intended or expected? Maybe not,  I would  go hassle free by spending the extra money on a new Mobo. Good luck my friend.

PCIe x16 slots 1, 2, 3:  When all three x16 slots are populated, how many PCIe lanes does each PCIe slot occupy?  Many other manufacturers run 8x/8x/4x with all three slots populated...the specs seems to indicate this board will run 8x/8x/1x.  Can anyone clarify?  TIA

I *think* you are correct in that it will do 8x/8x/1x, but I will defer to anyone else with more expertise.

Here are the specs from Gigabyte's site, which might help clarify. On the other hand it does appear that the Asus Z170 Pro Gaming (for example), does do 8x/8x/4x as you said.

Does this board have an 115X socket or is it just 1151? I have an 1155 cpu I would like to update the bios with but I don't know if it is supported.

Sorry, you can't swap socket types. If your processor is an 1155 then you must choose an 1155 board and insure it supports your specific cpu before purchase.  FYI: both 1155 and 1151 are 115X sockets. the "x" is a trailing descriptor digit to be filled in with an assigned digit usually based on physical compatibility
