thinking of having this a replacement for my old comp with vista, is it compatible with vista?

The drivers page at gigabyte has drivers for xp,7 and 8. I am running 7 myself. Vista is iffy. The big hurdle is going to be if intel made chipset drivers. A few years ago I tried to put 2000 on an NM10 based board (atom) and couldn't because intel didn't make drivers.

Short answer: Use Win7 and be happy.

Question 2

Does the eSATA connection on the rear panel affect the onboard SATA? In other words is the eSATA an alternate interface for one of the onboard interfaces?

The NM70 chipset (Panther Point-M) supports 1 port @ 6 Gbit/s, and 3 ports @ 3 Gbit/s. Can anyone confirm that the eSATA interface on the rear panel is indeed an independent interface for it's own SATA channel?

Is anyone running Vmware ESXi on this?

No, this board would be way underpowered.

I  don't think the onboard CPU supports virtualization either, but I didn't check

I maxed out the CPU running WIndows 7 and 2 IP camera's on it. Unless you are wanting to run a very small linux kernel, virtualization isn't going to be great on this board

Question 5

I see this unit has both VGA and HDMI connectors - Can it be used with 2 displays connected at the same time, such that they're seen as separate monitors?

According to Intel, the Celeron 1037U's integrated graphics supports three displays. So it should in theory. I'd test it out on mine, but I can't seem to find a VGA cable at the moment (it's been a year or more since I used one).

Question 6

Has anyone successfully installed this in a 1U?  In Angelino B. comments he claims it won’t fit, that the spring loaded fan mounting screws hit the bottom of the case.  I’d like to buy a few of these but not if they won’t fit in a 1U.

The heatsink's profile is lower than the I/O ports, so it's technically possible. I'd be worried about the CPU cooler, though, as it's a top-down cooler. Most 1U cooling solutions are designed to cool laterally, with air moving in one direction. A motherboard with a passive cooler and a 1U case with fans pushing air laterally through the case might be better choices.

Yes this will work with a 20 pin atx power supply. am using an 80 watt pico right now to power mine. still need the 4 pin 12v though.

Windows 7, yes.  I see no reason why Windows 8 would not work on this motherboard.
