What's the difference between this card and the other card that's $50 more but without the X?

X is the extreme edition which comes with a higher f as story overclock of 1770 vs the non-X at 1695 MHz. The X also comes with a little stand you can place at the end of your card to assist with gpu sag.

Would it be a good idea to have this card on a vertical mount?

Because of the size of the video card, using a vertical mount, depending the slot configuration of the motherboard, certainly will disable several slots, and possible make difficult to access other components such as memory.   So first thing to do is check your present of future motherboard, the slots and memory configuration and use of the slots you plan to use,  and the vertical mount configuration and positions you plan to buy.    
Only after that, you will see if the vertical mount idea is good or not.

If it is OK, then you could proceed with your idea, and of course, the video card will shine a lot more with the vertical mount.

This is the EXTREME VERSION. GV-N208TAORUS X-11GC as depicted in the warranty tab - link will take you to the Extreme Edition. Newegg put up the wrong box image (showing the non-extreme edition).

I just got mine today and got the Extreme Edition. Already reached out to customer service to correct the box image photo for future buyers. Currently Out of Stock
