Does this laptop have a backlit keyboard?

Yes. It arrives turned off which is disconcerting but labeled function keys brighten and dim in 3 levels. Not the brightest I’ve seen but pleasant and adequate.

I purchased one with these same specs. My VivoBook S15 (S510UN-MS52) came with a 256 GB SSD in the form of a SATA M.2 drive. There was empty space available to add a conventional 2.5" SATA HD or SSD. I added a 1 TB 2.5" SSD. I replaced the 256 GB SATA M.2 with a 1 TB SATA M.2. Also, I upgraded the RAM to 16 GB. No problems whatsoever. Watch YouTube videos on opening the case.

Can this be used with a pen?  My daughter likes to use her laptop to take notes by hand in her college classes. She did this with a Microsoft Surface which broke and now wants a larger laptop that still has that capability.

No, this does not have a touch screen. Asus does make laptops with this capability, however. Look for "2 in 1" in the product name. This often implies a touch screen with pen capability.

Can I remove the M.2 SSD and insert a 2.5" SSD and boot from that instead ?

There is a separate space available inside the laptop that can be used for a 2.5" drive if you want to add one. Also, I would recommend keeping the M.2 SSD and just use another 2.5" HDD as storage.

it use a m.2 SSD so there is a free 2.5" drive tray free no screws or mount kit but you should find something to work. It also has a free ram slot for another 8 gig stick. youtube has a good video on how to remove to back panel.

Yes. It's a very nice display panel. It's a full HD display, but not a Quad HD. This makes the battery life seem to last forever.

I want to upgrade mine with 9mm hdd (hgst hts541075a9e680 p/n: 0j26332 mlc: da5927 hitachi 750gb)is it possible ? or it is possible with 7mm only ?

I think if it is 2.5” HDD then it is possible. I already add Toshiba 2.5” HDD in my laptop. It is working well.

what's the battery life like?

From what I’ve observed, and only owning the laptop for roughly two weeks, if you are actively connected to the internet, and browsing PDF files, I’ve had the battery last up to almost 4-6 hours of continuous active use. When playing an older, less-demanding game like Starcraft remastered, it will last up to 45 minutes of play.
