Father's Day Poll Results: Tech and Tools Are Tops!

6/16/2010 Press Release

"Home Theater Systems" and "Fully Loaded Tool Boxes" Rate Highest as Gift Suggestions; Family Activities Rate Highly for Dad's "Perfect Day"

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. --  For Father's Day, America's Dads want their HDTV -- but a loaded tool box would also be nice. That's according to an online poll conducted by Newegg Inc., the second-largest online-only retailer in the United States. Newegg was recently named one of the top 5 in TWICE magazine's Top 25 PC Retailers report, compiled by The Stevenson Company.

The online poll asked Newegg visitors in the U.S. and Canada to answer questions about their Dad's preferences for Father's Day gifts and activities. When asked: "Which gift would make your Dad happiest on Father's Day?" more than 42% answered "Home Theater System," with "Fully Loaded Tool Box" coming in second at just over 26%. Blu-ray players scored over 10%, with "Pocket Camcorders" and "Fish Finder GPS Devices" rounding out the survey at about 7% each. Last but not least were E-Readers at around 6 ½%.

Father's Day - It's a Family Affair!

Heartwarmingly, the poll also showed that -- according to their kids, at least -- Dads really enjoy family activities. When asked what they thought Dad would rate as his "perfect day," the highest ranked answers were "Watching football on a big screen with the family" (35.64%) and "Grilling the perfect steak on a high-tech BBQ" at 32.64%.

How Tech-Savvy Is Your Dad?

Kids seem to trust in their Dad's ability to decipher today's high-tech lingo, with more than 70% of respondents saying they believe their Dad would know what the initials HDMI stand for (High Definition Multimedia Interface). Of today's high-tech gadgets that they think their Dad would like to play with, "Tablet Computers" came out on top at over 34%, followed by George Foreman Grills (23.23%) and GPS Tracking Devices (17.85%).

Finally, when asked what best describes their Dad, over 55% of offspring called their Dads "Expert Handyman," followed by "Straight-Up Computer Nerd" (14.34%),"Fishing Fanatic" (12.6%) and "Sports Maven" (10.06%).

Quote: A Wish for Father's Day

Bernard Luthi, Newegg vice president of marketing, web management and customer service, noted: "At Newegg we pride ourselves on carrying a vast range of great products, many of which will make ideal Father's Day gifts. So for our Father's Day survey, we thought it would be fun to ask our customers what they thought their Dads would like this year. In many ways, the results didn't surprise us very much. Our extensive online community is well known for being extremely tech savvy, so it makes sense that their Dads would share that passion for things like home theater and computers. We are happy to see that many of our customers are planning on relaxing with their families on Father's Day and wish them all a happy holiday!"
