Hi,
I got this item in order to perform remote access to a government mainframe system.  I used it on an XP system, with absolutely no issues.  It plugged into a USB 2.0 port, supported by a standard driver (from the vendor).  It worked perfectly for the five months of my contract, and now sits detached from the system, as I do not expect to use it later.  My son, NY National Guard, uses the same product on his laptop without any issues,

this device is USB port control for smart cards.
you can use this on any machine with Microsoft OS and compatible USB port.
Make sure you have appropriate driver software from manufacturer or third-party source.
My experience was with APPLE laptop, ACER laptop and desktop.

how do i use this on my chromebook?

I had a short-term contract needing access to a military base.  They supplied a CAC (Common Access Card) for (1) access to the base, and (2) access to computer systems on the base.  I used this CAC reader for remote access to their software (I provided programming services).  It plugged into a USB port without any issues, on my Apple laptop and my ACER laptop.  Once the software driver was installed (easy), it worked as advertized.
