I need to have 5" of clearance space below the shelf. Can I achieve this without removing the drawer and if not, is the drawer easily removable?

You cannot get the 5" of space without removing the drawer and I don't see a way to remove the drawer without breaking it. My two risers like this will not even go above the minimum height as there is a very cheap mechanism to raise them and if you put any amount of weight on them the catch will release and go down to the lower height. Hopefully you won't damage your monitor.
