Newegg Poll Asked Returning Students About Their Dorm Room and Campus Priorities; Students Chose Books Over Spring Break

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. - When students go back to school this fall, expect them to be stocked up on all the latest high-tech gear like MP3 players, laptop computers and smartphones, as well as all the spanking new books they need for learning, of course. And what might pleasantly surprise some folks is that today's kids say they plan on saving for their books and tech gear -- even if it means skimping on their Spring Break fund! That's according to an online "Back-to-School" poll conducted by Newegg Inc., the second-largest online-only retailer in the United States.

What Will Kids Scrimp and Save for This Year?

The online poll asked Newegg visitors who are students in the U.S. and Canada to answer questions about going back to school this year. When asked which back-to-school necessities they might be forced to skimp on this year due to the tough economy, more than 36% said they would skimp on their "Spring Break trip," while only about 10% of the students said they would take a pass on spending for new books.

Do Students Crave Fashion or Fancy Tech Gear?

There's encouraging news as well for jaded adults who think all today's young people care about is fashion. When asked: "What's more important to your back-to-school experience, the right clothes or the right gear?" more than 78% answered "the right gear."

TV Sets Are Still A Dorm Room Staple...

Many studies have shown that young people don't watch as much traditional TV as previous generations. But according to the Newegg poll, they still want their dorm TV sets. When asked to pick which electronics product they couldn't live without in their dorm room or apartment, TVs topped the list (37.42%). Not surprisingly, Gaming Consoles came in a very close second (30.97%), followed by Mini-fridge 15.43%, Coffee Maker 13.11% and Blu-Ray/DVD Player (3.07%).

And Facebook Is Here to Stay...

Finally, Facebook fans can take heart in knowing that college kids believe that the popular social media platform is here to stay... at least for a while. When asked which social media platform they think is in the greatest danger of being "extinct" by 2015, more than 47% chose Foursquare, over 20% chose Linkedin and only about 14% chose Facebook.
