Is this item new or refurb?

the item is new and new egg is great.  the machine is less than what i had hoped for as it is not a sealed unit and the dirt bin is too small.  otherwise great machine.  just have to empty it every time you  use. it.

2 questions - how heavy and how noisy?

Not too heavy, with the rotator attached it's light enough to be lifted with 2 fingers, roughly 15 lbs at max. It's extremely light when on the lift away base, feels like air almost. Noise, this varies, it depends on the level of suction you want as you can adjust it.  I love the vacuum personally.   I don't think it is nearly as noisy as some others I've heard.  Great power as well.

What do you have to do going from carpet to hardwood floors?

Nothing really, you can adjust the suction via the ring on top but you don't have to. However, this model does come with a hard floor attachment, which can be easily attached by disengaging the wand and snapping it on. It even has a swivel neck.

From there you can either carry around the canister in your offhand (its quite light), or place it on the dolly it comes with to roll it around.

This model doesn't have a brush height adjustment, but it doesn't need it. It's great.
