is the cord for this headset braided by chance? or normal rubber coating?

The cord has a normal rubber coating.  I have bought this specific headset a couple of times over the years because of its durability and toughness (I have a very BIG head), but the cord is the weakest link in the design.  On the up side, the cord is very long (8 feet).  This can help with cord routing away from pinch points to help avoid damage to the cord.  I recommend it.

This headset has a black 3.5 mm connector for audio and a grey 3.5 mm connector for the microphone. They are separate.

No and the pair I received, the plug ins were wired backwards....the green was the Mic and the red was the speakers.

I just use it with my HF transceiver and it is just plug and play.  No additional power necessary.

It has standard 3.5mm jacks that fit directly into a regular PC sound card.

You will need an adapter if by 'mini' you mean a 2.5mm jack like some cell phones have.

This unit might be a bit large for a child. As an adult man, they fit me fine with room to spare. The microphone rotates up and down, but you cannot adjust the length, nor is it the type you can bend into various shapes. The unit is very sturdy, it has survived numerous drops and bangs. The only issues you'll likely have is that the spit guard will come off the mic and the padding on the ears will eventually rub off, shedding black flakes. That's only after a year+ of daily use though.
