What cables - if any - comes with this monitor.  I have HDMi and Thunderbolt (USB Type-C) ports on my laptop.  If I have to buy one, what type of cable do I need to buy?

It comes with 4 separate ways (ports) to get to the monitor: VGA, HDMI, Displayport (DP) and UBS Type B.  It accordingly comes with 4 cables (each 3 feet long): 3 of these cables are the same on both ends (male:male) for HDMI, DisplayPort and VGA.  The 4th cable is a USB 3.0 Type B (square-ish looking connector on the monitor) to a regular high speed USB (what you'd connect to PC/laptop).  There is not a Thunderbolt connector to the monitor, just the 4 listed above.  The HDMI would work just fine, or if you had a USB Type C on one end and one fo the 4 types on the other end: USB Type B, HDMI, VGA or DisplayPort.  Hope this helps!  I just got mine and works great - I am using a VGA because this is just easier for my laptop setup.

Can the monitor be used vertically?

Yes, any monitor can be used vertically; it's up to the video driver to rotate the display.  But if you mean can it be rotated vertically on its stand, the answer to that is also yes; its stand has full tilt, swivel, rotate and vertical height adjustments.
