Does this unit have a CD player that reads and writes, or is it a read only CD player?

I have not tried to write but it looks like a regular Read/Write CD-R.
Overall, a good system for the price.

does it have an hdmi  connection?  what slots are available for cards?

No HDMI port. I haven't opened up the chassis to see what slots it has but a doc on HP site suggests that there are two PCIe x1 slots and a low-profile PCIe x16 slot.

Exactly what kind of processor is in this unit... the description lists just speed, not name. Is this an Intel Core 2 Duo?

The one I ordered had a Core2Duo processor. It would probably be best to ask the seller what he's going to ship.

Is this computer WiFi ready?

This computer is Not Wi-Fi ready, but you can purchase a USB Wireless Network Adapter or an internal PCI Express Network adapter and make your computer wireless.

I'm looking to acquire 3-4 desktops for use in child care center computer lab.  used by 4-10 year olds.  Keep price down.  ability to run educational programs and some games.  Recommendations?

What exactly is the integrated graphics on this particular model?! I went to google the computer's integrated graphics and the HP site shows that his model can have a variety of different integrated graphics

The graphics chipset on the two I purchased was the Intel Q45/Q43 express. Very nice units.
