HP's Server Console Switch G2 with Virtual Media and Common Access Card (CAC) support is a key component in managing the data center and along with the IP Console Switch G2 with VM allows remote access to multiple servers running various operating systems. Virtual Media capability allows a removable drive to be mapped to an attached server in the data center for software installations and upgrades. An intuitive Local Console User Interface provides menus for configuration, virtual media, display, and even security and upgrades from the local console. The term CAC stands for Common Access Card, also known as “Smart Cards”. The CAC support allows government agencies and other companies to secure their network access with two-factor authentication. The G2 with VM KVM appliances support USB smart card readers.

In cascaded environments the HP IP and Server Console Switch G2 with Virtual Media & CAC can allow an administrator to manage up to 1024 servers across two tiers from a single console. When tiered with additional HP Server Console Switches with Virtual Media application installations and upgrades can be pushed through to any server on any of the two tiers from the top tier local console.

PerformanceThe HP KVM Server Console G2 Switch AF618A supports increased video resolutions up to 1600 x 1200 on both the local port as well as remote consoles. It can be tiered under HP IP Console Switches G2 with Virtual Media to provide remote access and remote virtual media.
ManagementThe HP KVM Server Console G2 Switch AF618A utilizes an OBWI (On Board Web Interface) for remote management, which is the same with Local Console User Interface. Local USB pass-through provides an easy method of updating and installing firmware, applications, and operating systems directly to attached servers. Firmware updates for the switch can now be accomplished over the LAN.
SecurityLocal security prevents unauthorized access. The HP KVM Server Console G2 Switch AF618A also supports Common Access Card (CAC)/ Smart Cards for two-factor authentication and dual-stack IPv6 with stateless auto configuration for improved security.
Two Local PortsThese local ports are defined differently between the digital and analog appliances. For the digital appliances, the local ports will be represented by one ACI connection and one local KVM connection. The two ports will be independent of one another (i.e. not pre-emptive or shared). For the analog appliance, the local ports are represented by an ACI connection and two sets of local KVM connections. One of the KVM connections is tied to the ACI connection, so that KVM connection cannot be used if the ACI is connected. The second KVM connection is independent of the ACI and first KVM connections/paths.
Other New FeaturesThe HP KVM Server Console G2 Switch AF618A features True Serial, DVD media support, existing interface adapters support, Syslog support and dual power supplies for redundant power, providing improved functionality, performance, and security to the datacenter.
OptionsThe new Interface Adapters provide Smart Card / CAC and Virtual Media support using the USB 1.1 full-speed protocol for approximately 6x CD-ROM data transmission speed, existing VM IA’s, AF603A and AF604A using USB 2.0 high-speed data transmission speed for approximately 12x CD-ROM. KVM functions work with all existing HP Cat5 based PS2, USB, and Serial Interface Adapters.
