What RAM does it use and what is the maximum RAM it will support?

It uses DDR2 800 Ram also known as PC 6400 which is the last DDR2 before DDR3 came out. You can up the RAM with any DDR2 like the DDR2 667 or DDR2 533 but if mixed it will run at the slowest of the installed types. It is upgradable to 8 GB of RAM but the installed 2 GB provides a decent experience too and very few new computers for "the masses" come with more than 4 GB.

Some are selling this same basic model but with the 32 bit version of W7 and while it's motherboard will handle 8 too the 32 bit version basically maxes out at 4 GB that can be used.

I've bought 4 of these now and upped one 64 bit version to 4 GB and can't tell any difference in speed from my 8 GB DDR3 laptop! I think like camera megapixels and 4000k TVs that RAM has finally hit a number that most people don't really need.

Question 4

I have bought two of these. Neither of them will produce sound. On boot up I get an error message stating. "The SoundMAX audio driver did not load. You may need to re-install SoundMAX." I have tried re-installing the audio driver but to no avail. I would love and answer to this before I ship back another one of these. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

I don't use Windows on mine but I will offer a few guesses:  What does Device Manager show?  Nothing should be disabled.  Check in the BIOS and ensure sound is enabled. Are there other sound-related programs installed, if so, they may be causing issues.  Other hardware may be causing conflicts as well.  Look in the Windows event logs for more details.

Does this package include the win7 64 bit oem install disk? If so is it the HP one? Or is win7 already installed and activated?

No, it does not come with recovery media. W7 is installed but you have to use the product key on a sticker on the computer to activate it. There is an included program that will allow you to make your own recovery media but you have to do it on a USB flash drive of at least 8 GB. There is also a hidden recovery partition that can be accessed.

I am having gissues with trying to upgrade from XP to Win8, something about there being insufficient space. How can this be?

Minimum requirements for Windows 8.1 are as follows.

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2 
RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver.

If you are doing an upgrade to 64bit that could be the problem. Personally I would upgrade to Windows 7 32 bit on that machine not 8. A clean install is recommended not an upgrade.
