is "d-sub" the same as the old VGA connection?

yes this monitor will work with your old vga connector but it does not have sound so just use computer speakers I hope this helps it is a nice monitor for the price

is there a plug in for speakers?

No, there is no plug in for speakers. This is a very basic VGA monitor with no receiver. I use it for a Unix console so only have a text "green screen". Note also this is a square screen so I would not recommend it for graphical op systems or media.

Does the monitor come with cables and a warranty?

Our monitor came with cables. Don't recall if a warranty came with it, but for a very nominal fee, we purchased a warranty. This monitor works great for our shipping manifest application and we have not absolutely no problems with it.
