It seems like all HP devices must be used with the app. Do I have to use the app to print on this?

I don't know the answer. Our file clerk uses it to print appointment schedules for pulling files. I don't believe there are any apps allowed as we would not allow apps to be used in the file room, so I assume the answer would be no.

what;s the range of wireless;can I print from my laptop in living room if the printer is in back room? MyDSL connection is in back room and I receive internet ok in living room

If the printer connects via the WiFi, it should be able to print regardless of its location or the computer's. If it doesn't show up on the WiFi network, it likely won't print.
