Can you install programs by inserting a CD/DVD into this device?

Accepted Answer

Yes - once connected to (and recognized by) the server or workstation, you can use this device as you would an internal CD/DVD device.  Recall that the USB interface will likely be slower than an internal SATA device, but that does not affect the functionality.

Does this unit have the capability to work with a USB 3.0 port?

I have used mine with USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports. Works fine. I really like the little drive. No external power is needed, all through the USB connection. Stores away nicely when not needed.. which is about 98% of the time these days. Good luck with your decision.

Can you remove a disk when no power is available?

Yes, you can open it by pushing a paper clip through the hole in the face of the tray.  That will unlatch the mechanical mechanism inside.  Most desktop and laptop drives have this feature as well.

Thank you for your question. Regrettably I haven't yet used this device and cannot answer your question regarding Light Scribe capability.

I recommend looking all this information up on the Hewlett-Packard website. If the information isn't there, I suggest calling HP and asking one of sales representatives. They have been extremely helpful whenever I have spoken with them.

Does burning software come with this external drive?

Mine came with Cyberlink Media Suite 10 which includes the following applications..

PowerDVD 12 BD
PowerDirector 9.0
PowerBackup 2.5
Power2Go 8.0
LabelPrint 2.5
MediaShow 6.0

Note: I have not installed/used these as I've only needed a player for my ultra book, so cannot comment on the software itself.

Is this compatible with Windows 8?

The installation was easy.  I haven't used it much yet, since I mostly use my desktop, but it played music quite nicely, showed a movie well enough except that the ultrabook screen is really too small for me to be totally sure and what  I wrote to it and copied back was perfect.  I won't be using the Blu Ray disc capability because I don't have any of them, but the CD and DVD  RW were what I wanted and they were fine.  Certainly worth five stars given, as I wrote above, that I have no way to check the Blu Ray anything.

I plugged the brand new usb external dvd writer  model 600s-H01 5 into my laptop, put a dvd movie in it and the writer/player does nothing!  How does it work?

My answer assumes that you have a pc as opposed to a mac. The methods are probably similar, but I have no working knowledge of Apple products.

I think that the first thing that you should do is to make sure that your laptop recognizes the dvd drive. Look in "my computer" and the external writer should appear with a drive letter assigned to it. If not, check the connection.

If it's OK, click start-control panel-auto play. Click on that and it will present you with a series of options to open various media (cd's, dvd's, etc). Make your choices and click "save".

If auto play doesn't work, then try directly accessing the external drive through "my computer".  Right click on the drive. You should then be given some options to open the media. Hope that helps.

Is this USB powered? ie only one USB connection for both power and read/write?

Yes, it has a very short USB cable and no other power. It is meant to sit on top a computer with USB ports that are plugged in from the top.

Question 9

Will it work with Windows8.1 and the upcoming Windows10 running on a HP Pavilion X360? I seriously do not want to waste the money on what would become obsolete the minute Windows10 rolls around.

i bought it in oct 2013 for a windows 8.1 laptop.  no problem at all,  dont know 10 but cant imagine it will not.
