I have not had any problems with my laptop. I originally had it sent to my son to check out and update. I read that the computer is fine but needs updates so that is why I sent it to him. I picked it up in late June and have been using it with no problems.

Is this a touchscreen?

No, it is not a touchscreen.  It is a glossy computer all around the keyboard and screen.  If it were a touchscreen it would show fingerprints (when off) all over the place.  When I was shopping for a Laptop I was thinking I wanted a touchscreen.  But for the price and specs of this laptop, I am completely satisfied and do not regret the lack of a touchscreen.

Yes it does.  The OS update takes a while but it looks like quite a machine for the money

Dual GPU tech seems like it could crank out some more gaming power than with just the APU, which I hear is pretty good. What games have you been able to play on this? Could it run the recent fps on reasonable settings?

I purchased this laptop for two reasons, 1) cheapest 17" I could find; 2) it replaced a 17" HP/AMD A8 that struggled to run just about any graphics-heavy game I tried.

The HP Pavilion 17-d049wm laptop does actually have a CPU with separate APU and dedicated RAM, which is very different than most HP/AMD laptops that use the CPU as an APU w/shared RAM (like the A8 I used previously).

I primarily use this laptop for the Need for Speed series of games, and I can have the graphics cranked-up to Maximum and the games run pretty well.  Because of the type of game I play, with the motion and on-line with other players, I use the "standard" settings and have not experienced ANY problems.  The games run awesome and the graphics are pretty good.

On a scale of 1-10 how good is this laptop when it comes to gaming can I crank the settings on high or ultra?

it dose much better then i expected
 i have turned up the graphics to high/ultra on the following game and not have a problem: EVE online. bioshock infinite, deus ex: HR, dishonered, hitman Absolution, thief 2014,  watchdogs, skyrim with offical HD tex pack, and wow 60fps no problem at peek time in market hub

not sure what the requirements for the game are. But i used this computer for our work database. It handled everything i threw at it, including using dual monitor setup. I don't think the wireless would keep up with the game, Im sure if you used a wireless connection you will be fine tho. Again i didn't use mine for games, but as far as performance i don't think it would have much trouble running it.

Hi

I just received this laptop and after doing the 96 updates the machine restarts like normal but fails to configure windows updates and says its reverting changes.  However, it never reverts anything it just sits here.  I assume my onlyo
ption is to return the machine for another one?

Mine did the same thing; this is not so much to do with the hardware as it is something going on with Window$ update.

I finally just hit the power button, forcing it off.  Then I just restarted and it finally came back to Window$, where I ran the updater again.  Updates then were successful and everything went fine, even the update to Windows 8.1.

NOTE:  Create that backup media on DVD or thumb drive ASAP in case something goes wrong.  then you can restore and start from scratch if needed.  I admit that the Window$ updates required to get this thing going are ridiculous, but that's just how screwed-up Windows 8.0 was/is.  8.1 is much better, with few updates after you get there......

I want to swap the hdd with ssd later on. Is it sata 3?

According to the HP Maintenance & Service Guide the HD SATA Ports for all models have a MAX transfer rate of 1.1Gb/second.

As you are probably aware, the specification for SATA3 is 6 Gb/second.

So, I would say the answer is No support for SATA3 at 6 Gb / second.  It may support a SATA3 device, but the MAX Xfer rate will always be 1.1 Gb/second.

You can verify this by logging on to the HP website and selecting Support.  From there navigate to the Chat with an Agent and they can assist further.

I just happen to own this particular laptop and the overall performance is excellent!  I use it as a gaming system and most games support the full screen at max resolution.
