is this a 17" screen?

It is.  It's a monster compared to what I'm used to now (Surface Pro 4) but my client likes it.  It's reasonably fast, too.  Maybe not Samsung SSD fast, but way faster than anything with a mechanical HDD.

how do i activate its touch screen option? i keep getting options to activate tablet mode.

Tablet mode is an option that can be enabled regardless of whether not you have a touch screen.  A normal installation of windows on a non touch computer would generally have the option disabled, however, with mass produced computers from mainstream manufacturers, the option is turned on so it meets also meets the requirements of touch display computers. Your model of computer does not have a touch screen. To avoid accidentally turning on tablet mode, a search through settings, which is accessible from the start menu, will reveal the option to disable tablet mode.

is the 5.8 lbs accurate? Seems unlikely given that it has the DVD drive and is 17"
