Pros:
Small
ILO 4
Holds 4 3.5" drives
Upgradable CPU/RAM
ILO 4
Room for extra drives
Runs FreeNAS 9.2 smoothly
Oh, did I mention, ILO 4?
Cons:
Possibly fan if noise is an issue, when running in AHCI mode instead of using RAID the ILO cannot read the SMART temperatures of the drives and overcompensates by boosting fan speed to avoid damaging them.
My microserver is in the basement with my home lab and is still the quietest item I'm running. So this was a non-issue for me.
Overall Review: Can't beat it for the price.
Pros:
- form factor (sits next to bed in bedroom)
- quiet (never notice it, but it does sit next to a bigger pc so maybe it just blends its noise in :)
- hdd storage for its size (fits 4!)
Cons: - CPU could be beefier, but suits my purpose
Overall Review: After stuffing 4hdds in this this when it arrived, I installed ubuntu server and plex, and I haven't had to physically touch it for as long as I can remember. CPU could be a bit beefier for transcoding multiple video streams, but in my case Plex usually does direct play and there's no transcoding going on. Overall satisfied with this purchase, especially for the use I've gotten out of it.
Pros: Since I am using this box for my home lab ESXi and I downloaded the HP Customized ESXi Image from hp site, everything work as expected. I don't know which verision of bios the guys were using when complaining about the FAN noise, but mine is quite silent. It is so quiet that I put this box on my desk.
Cons: Maybe the RAM limit size to 16GB would be a con. Price tag for a home lab is a bit high when you have to buy other pieces to make it work.
Overall Review: Quiet, small box, easy to install customized ESXi image right from the HP site http://www8.hp.com/us/en/products/servers/solutions.html?compURI=1499005#tab=TAB4 makes this microserver a good choice for home lab.
Pros: Sleek design, compact and really quiet even when using AHCI (Thanks to the latest ROM). Comes with Intelligent Provisioning for easy configuration, deployment and maintenance and iLO4 Management Processor that can be accessed from a dedicated NIC port or by sharing the server's NIC#1.
Cons: The Embedded B120i controller is a half baked Smart Array controller.
Overall Review: You don't need to buy HP Smart Memory or HP Hard Drives. Mine is running fine with 16Gb Kingston's ECC (p/n KTH-PL316E/8G) and 4 Western Digital Red NAS hard drives.
Pros:
Small, stackable frame
Half-height x16 slot + separate iLO port (read: IPMI)
Upgradeable to a low-voltage Xeon
Runs quiet in HP RAID mode (proprietary driver, limited support)
Cons:
Runs louder in non-HP AHCI or IDE mode (generic LSI driver)
G2020T not worth it, go w/ Celeron unit
No hot-swap w/o extra HP controller ($$$)
Management console requires HP sub ($$$)
Restrictive memory compatibility list
No firmware updates w/o HP sub ($$$)
Laughable mfgr. cheapness: no indicator lights on drive caddies or even next to the slots
Overall Review: If you're at a firm that just loves HP & wants to marry them then you'll get what you'd expect: a near-ProLiant packed into a tiny frame (15-20% premium just for that) which plays well with existing HP servers & infrastructure. For everyone else it's a confidence trick. The fanboys across the web touting the "innovative design" and "build quality" neglect to mention that any DIY equivalent -- especially with these low-end Intel chips -- is at least $100 cheaper and avoids entanglement in HP's revenue-squeezing schemes. Attn. fanboys, this is *NOT* a "like, cool file server, like, that I can also like, use as an HTPC" (unless your trust fund permits such lavishness). It lacks any decent onboard GPU and comes with nothing else you'd need for personal use, plus you get dunned on the junk pseudo-LSI Fakeraid disk controller HP generously included. It wouldn't be too bad as a dedicated lab unit or VM box, except who cares about a lab server being tiny? The mediocre ventilation rules out an industrial application (not to mention, the presence of 4 big mechanical disks that also rules out industrial applications). In reality it's targeted at gullible purchasing departments as a sort of gateway drug: your company may not have lengthy experience of fat service contracts with HP and their insanely priced "HP approved" drives and add-on cards, but after you buy one or two of these that's the proprietary leash to which they eagerly hope to consign you. Because you already sunk $500-$1000 into 1-2 of their "microservers" -- and you get to pick a different color face plate for each one, so cute
Pros: Bought this for a home ESXi lab. Considered building a whitebox, but I like that this has out-of-box driver support and HP iLO (more on that later). In contrast to some other reviews, I find it to be really quiet (which was important since it's in a guest bedroom). The case is compact and aesthetically pleasing. Internally, it's definitely heavily engineered. Removing/shifting components isn't always intuitive, but it was expected given the small form-factor. Runs ESXi quite nicely with relatively quick boot, it has an internal USB connector which I use for a USB thumb drive to host ESXi.
Cons: To use iLO's full functionality, you need to buy a license from HP. Max RAM supported is 16GB, would be really nice if it was 32GB. There's no easy way to mount a 2.5" SSD. I tried purchasing a separate Thermaltake drive caddy with the idea of mounting the SSD in one of the removable drive bays, but it still didn't fit. I ended up unscrewing a pair of the SATA connection boards and pulling them up so that the SSD can rest on top of the inner metal housing. Not ideal, but it works fine.
Overall Review: Despite the cons, I'm generally happy with the Microserver. It handles my vSphere environment reasonably well and I'm considering purchasing another one for HA and more capacity. When purchasing RAM, the microserver requires Unbuffered RAM. I used Kingston 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1333 Server Memory Model
Pros: Small, quiet, seemingly solid build (except for drive cages)
Cons:
Price seemed a bit high for what I could probably build myself, but I paid for convenience.
Drive cages were the only flimsy part of the entire chassis.
For someone who's not used to server grade hardware/bios features the initial setup was a bit more complicated than a traditional PC.
No included optical drive.
The optical drive bay should have ability to mount small SSD for OS, but doesn't.
The optical drive power cable is old style (Think old floppy power) while the data cable is SATA, so an adapter is required.
Overall Review: For what I use this for, which is plex media server and backup, this little box has been wonderful. Great up time with Windows Home Server 2011, only rebooting for MS updates.

Pros: Nice small form factor
Cons: HP requires active support contract to get updates. No other vendor to my knowledge is this lame. NEVER BUYING FROM THEM AGAIN! Can't even get the network drivers for the box to boot W2K8.
Overall Review: DO NOT BUY!
