Anybody use them with intel 6th gen Skylake? Are they OK?

Hi, I will say that I do not have sky lake. But I do have the first generation that started ddr 4. I have not had one single issue with them at all. I have a x-99 with 5820k. Just make sure to get a motherboard that supports xmp and it should be golden. Second generations of ddr 4 motherboards it should be even better

Question 2

I bought a Gateway tower computer for my son in 2008.  He died a few months after the purchase so this computer has not been used since.  It has two 512 memory chips in it.  I would like to replace our older pc we use daily with this computer and want to upgrade to 4 gig of memory. Do you know how much memory I could install on this computer?  I may opt of 8 gig if possible.  This pc runs Vista but we will upgrade to Windows 7 or 8.

Sorry for the delay.  I just check this message.  Deep sympathy for your lose, condolence. First thing you have to know is to make sure your pc can even support to upgrade to win7.  Please check prerequisite to install Win7 or Win8 so you don't regret buying part but then finding that you can not in the end.  I made that mistake once. On most older PC depending on your motherboard built can only take up to 4g.  The way my assumption to your pc would not be able to upgrade to WIN7, I never like Vista, like my old pc is now trash since xp is now obsolete.  Sorry is not much of a help, but this give you a start.
