Is this mag stripe reader able to read the new embedded credit cards coming out this year?

The UniMag II simply reads the data off two of the three strips on the credit card's magnetic strip. If that doesn't change with the new cards then yes, but if you require information from the embedded chip then this will not work for you.

I can say, however, that if all you want to do is read the mag strip info the reader is a little flimsy, but other than that we have had great success with it in conjunction with stripe.io.

Don't buy any of these card swipers, only buy from your merchant provider. Most of these do not have the specific encryption needed for use.

No it doesn't. Without the SDK I decided to not work with the item as I only purchased 1 for evaluation.

It works great ok any Apple product.  No additional software required and it is actually very accurate and durable compared to what we perceived it to be. 
We use them for our winery,  Hearst Ranch.

If it is encrypted, what provider does it use?

It's not exclusive to any provider. We use is on 3 different softwares and have not had a problem.

can i use with existing merchant account with NPC?

Yes you should be able to. This card reader only reads and prints data off your card and fills it in the correct spot where Info is required. Basically it's a faster way to type down the cc number. However it's not a precessing device such as the square so yes it's definately usable with your existing npc. You can always return it if it doesn't work. Good luck.
