The first Metal Gear Solid game I’ve played was MGS 2: Sons of Liberty. It wasn’t anything like what I was used to in a game. Planning out how to get through a line of enemies without alerting the guards was a totally new experience. MGS games have yet to lose their touch, and their inclusion of the latest in science fiction technology.

With Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’s release upon us, it’s a good time to look back at some of the series’ impressive and more memorable science fiction technologies.

Night Vision

Light

Every modern military should have some form of night vision. There is no exception in Metal Gear Solid. I remember how handy this was, up until a guard or drone would flash a giant fog light at you.

UAV and Drone Technology

Quadcopter

Throughout missions you’d often be confronted with security in the form of UAVs. They were a pain to deal with. Let’s hope that governments don’t start implementing machined gun armed security drones like the ones in MGS.

We can expect the tech in MGS V to be just as interesting by today’s standards. Will it have a host of drones to deal with in its open environment? Or hidden cameras? Time will tell once the game is released. One thing’s for certain, there will be a TON of hot air balloons.

Nanomachines

Machines

Can’t heal fast enough? No problem. With nano-bots there’s nothing that can’t be done. The nanomachines of MGS can add adrenaline, nutrients, or even add a specialized defense virus to your system. They can even be recharged by using body heat.

Genetic Engineering

Super soldiers have been a long running feature of science fiction movies and novels, and MGS placed them right into the video game world. With gene therapy used to enhance Special Forces, there’s no there’s no telling what they could do. Would you alter your genes to become a super soldier?

Boxes

Box

Let’s not forget the boxes! Who knew that the greatest Special Forces agent of video gaming history could turn such a simple item into the most iconic espionage weapon of the franchise?

Artificial intelligence & Mass Surveillance

Metal Gear

Just like in real life, the military in MGS has been working hard to develop a mass surveillance system. Except in Metal Gear Solid games we saw the combination of this mass surveillance with a powerful artificial intelligence with nefarious intentions. While we can be pretty certain that massively advanced AI are being developed, let’s hope they don’t get too weaponized.

Cyborg Sword Wielding Ninjas

A hallmark of any MGS game is that you are bound to see a sword wielding robotic looking ninja at some point. Who wouldn’t want one of those saving the day and making things easier as you travel through your mission?

The Best of Metal Gear Solid

Puppy distraction

We’ve taken a look at some of the tech in the Metal Gear Solid series, but what’s your favorite Metal Gear Solid game experience and technology that we might have missed? Let us know in the comments below.
