Will this card work in a 2009 xserve?

I've used this card on several types of machines (mainly with Supermicro or Asus motherboards), all running Linux.  I've had no difficulties with hardware or software.  However, the card requires SFP+ modules - notice that final '+', it is important.  I always have used the Intel SFP+ modules; do not use an SFP without the '+'.  The card comes with both a low and high profile bracket.  As you can see in the photo, it needs some room for cooling air flow.  And it does require a PCI-Express slot that has at least the requisite number of lanes.

Can you chain nodes together with these network adapters, like bridging adapters in vSphere or do they have to go through a switch?

Yes, you can connect Devices together on a 10GB pipe or bridge the connection for 20GB.  No switch or router is required. Just make sure you have the latest Intel software version 15.1 or above for the NICs.

Will this card combined with the Intel E10GSFPLR properly receive EPON downstream data?

No.

no SFP module in it  you have to get the module yourself depending with one fit your need.

Will this work on Windows 11. And does it come with drivers?

The Intel E10G42BTDA Server Adapter X520-DA2 is compatible with Windows server, but there is no specific mention of compatibility with Windows 11. It is noted that it can be difficult to install the drivers.

There is a driver disc, I recommend you download the most current driver as the one on the disc is several revs old.

We have some old mellanox 10g cards that are starting to fail and need a replacement.
Direct connection using SFP cable to SFP NAS.
Will these cards work in Xeon Workstations running Windows 7 Pro or Windows 10Pro?
Also is drivers included?

it depend this network are spf port  you have to buy a rj45 to spf to make this work with a rj45 cable.
