Question 1

Just looking at this and wondering if this could be used as a replacement for a old HP desk top computer... and could I still use my old keyboard, mouse and monitor?  Could  I have more RAM and bigger ssd added?  Thanks in advance.

I've used the NUC series for years now as desktop replacements.  I love the tiny footprint.  It does require a monitor with an HDMI input, and the keyboard and mouse connect via USB, (not PS2, unless you use a dongle).  You can configure these any way you like, i.e. RAM and SSD, within the parameters for maximums stated in the specs.  I use an ASUS external CD/DVD drive connected also via USB.  The CD/DVD drive has a larger footprint.  I haven't had any failures.  If you need more USB ports or a card reader, just use a USB hub.

Can we add  2.5 inch SSD ?

Yes. Intel has a list of compatible SSD drives in the user manual for this PC.
