I am thinking this will work for my simple business rather than the QB pro I have been using for 3 years.
Can I import my existing QB pro data or will I need to manually enter all of it?

You probably want to verify with Intuit Tech Support before you spend money, but my guess would be no.  This would appear to be a lower level (cheaper) version, and Intuit goes out of its way to make sure that you cannot take information from a more expensive package and import it into a less expensive version of their software.  I have plenty of painful experience with this in Quicken.

Probably not.  The title says "Simple Start".  Intuit loves to collect extra dollars for its QuickBooks Payroll add on (and many other useful features).  As they say on their web site, "easily activate more features, as your needs change"  and further down, they give the example "Turn on payroll and pay your employees."

Question 5

Is this software product appropriate for a new nonprofit organization?  There will be no paid employees.  Also, I was told this product IS compatible with LivePlan?  (LivePlan is another software, not a store.)  I will be using the software on a Mac running Maverick.

I think it should work. But the point is that if its a non profit and you are not going to run any payroll why you need this. 
You can use normal Excel file for day to day activities.

What does this "product" provide? The "description" here is not very inclusive and there is NO useful information on the Inuit website. However, the website shows this product as a subscription based offering. So, back to my original question, what  exactly is being sold here, 12 months of (cloud) service?

Yes, you receive 12 months of service. I have used the service 2 years and it meets my needs well.  In the service, you can define a list of customers and a list of vendors and track your interactions with them. Create invoices, track receipts, track expenses and payments, etc.  All the typical accounting activity.

Standard QuickBooks Pro is a full featured program that runs as an application on the computer. QuickBooks Simple Start Online is a very basic version of the QuickBooks program and its web based. Depending upon your needs Simple Start may be all you need. Given the choice of a traditional application and a web based version, I would personally go with the web based program. You do not have to worry about updating the software each year, your information is stored in the cloud so you do not have to worry about backups, and you can access it anywhere you have an internet connection, even from an iPhone.
