Question 1

I need a device that will allow wireless access from multiple computers to the external hard drive and a printer scanner that is compatiable with windows 7 and windows 8.  What do you recommend??

It worked great with Windows 7 OS for an Epson Stylus Photo R1900 Printer. The installation guide that the print server came with references Windows XP and Vista but it worked fine with Windows 7. I did install the print drivers on each of our our networked computers first and then installed the print server software. Since the Epson Stylus Photo R1900 Printer software was for XP and Vista too, I connected the printer via USB to each computer and Windows 7 installed the printer drivers automatically through "plug and play".   Once the printer was connected to the network and the print server software was installed on a networked computer, the printer was immediately identified by the print server software and I was able to print to the specified printer.

Question 2

Has anyone ever used more than one of these on one network?  Will they conflict, or can you use multiples?

I've been using these (or perhaps earlier versions) in multiple quantities on the same network (IPX and IP) for many years.   Use the provided software to set them up.   No, they won't conflict if you set them up, using the provided software (PS Admin or the setup wizard) and common sense.

These fail unpredictably.    So for critical situations, keep one in reserve, and test it right after you buy it... before putting it in your storage locker for urgent redeployment.

I don't see Brother HJL-2230 on the compatibility list. Has anyone tried this print server with HL-2230?

Test:  Do you have the HL-2230 working with regular USB? 
After using this product for some time, I feel any USB printer, for which you have a driver compatible with your operating system, will work satisfactorily.  Key point: You are required to have said printer driver.
